Zcash Rockets to 8-Year High as Grayscale Pushes ETF Conversion

Zcash just had one of the sharpest moves in the sector this year. Grayscale filed an 8-K with the SEC around August 21 signaling intent to convert its Zcash Trust into an ETF listed on NYSE Arca, and the move landed just as the market was already warming to privacy-focused assets, sending ZEC up more than 40% to above $805.

The rally builds on an already wild 2025-2026 run. ZEC gained over 1,400% off its lows through a multi-month surge that peaked near $750 in November 2025, then cooled into a $500–$700 range by mid-August — before this week’s breakout blew through that range entirely.

By the following day, momentum pushed even further. ZEC hit $855 on August 22 as Grayscale filed its final amended registration, taking the token to its highest price in eight years and fully erasing a June drop tied to a patched vulnerability. The vehicle is set to trade as ZCSH on NYSE Arca starting August 25, holding up to roughly 393,000 ZEC (over $260 million) with Coinbase as custodian.

Mechanically, the filing details are notable too: it’s Grayscale’s fifth amendment to the registration statement, proposing to rename the vehicle “The Zcash ETF” — which would be the first US spot ETF tracking a privacy-coin. It carries an annual sponsor fee of 2.5%, with Bank of New York Mellon as transfer agent and Coinbase Custody as custodian. An earlier amendment noted a Digital Currency Group subsidiary was in talks to seed the fund with around 200,000 ZEC.

There’s now speculative chatter forming around the size of the move: some in the community are debating whether ZEC could eventually “flip” XRP by market cap — a scenario that would require roughly a 680% rise to over $5,500 — though that’s firmly in speculative territory rather than a near-term thesis.

Why it matters: this isn’t just a price pump — it’s a signal that a major US asset manager is willing to wrap a privacy-coin in a regulated ETF structure and get the SEC to engage with it through normal channels, which repositions the entire privacy-asset category as investable infrastructure rather than a regulatory grey zone.
