Kuwait has launched a nationwide crackdown on illegal cryptocurrency mining operations as the country grapples with an escalating energy crisis. According to government sources, dozens of unauthorized mining farms have been dismantled, following a sharp spike in electricity consumption that put the national grid at risk.
The Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy cited the high energy demand of crypto mining rigs as unsustainable, especially during peak summer usage.
While Kuwait banned crypto mining in 2023, illegal activity continued underground, taking advantage of heavily subsidized electricity. The latest move signals a tougher stance as the region faces growing strain on its power infrastructure, echoing similar actions in China, Kazakhstan, and Iran.
No formal charges have been announced, but authorities confirmed that all seized equipment will be destroyed.
